The House at Vörågatan 12

Vörågatan 12 in Vaasa, where Vaasa Smiles has opened its dental and skin clinic, is a historic building designed by Finnish architect Fredrik Thesleff. The property is a great example of Jugend (Art Nouveau) architecture in the city of Vaasa and was built in 1897 as residences for the master distillers of the Pohjola distillery. Over the years, the building has served various residential purposes, and most recently, it was used as a rehearsal and event venue called "Cantare" for a men's choir.

Thesleff, who also designed other iconic buildings in Vaasa, had a significant impact on the city’s architectural style. His works, such as the Kurtenia bank building and the house on Vörågatan 12, are appreciated examples of Art Nouveau and national romanticism. In the summer of 2024, the property was acquired by J. Forss Oy/Ab, which is now undertaking extensive renovations to restore the building's original splendor, while adapting it to house the new Vaasa Smiles dental and skin clinic.

The Architect Fredrik Thesleff

Fredrik Thesleff (1850–1909) was a prominent Finnish architect who contributed to the development of Finnish architecture at the end of the 19th century. He is best known for his influence on Art Nouveau, an architectural and artistic movement characterized by decorative and nature-inspired details. Thesleff's architectural works often combined classical and Neo-Renaissance styles with the more organic forms of Art Nouveau. Through his works, he helped establish a unique architectural identity in Finland during this period, setting it apart from the rest of Europe.

Thesleff's works can be found in several Finnish cities and include both public buildings and private residences, showcasing his skill and adaptability. He was part of the generation of Finnish architects who laid the foundation for Finnish architecture at a time when Finland was striving to find its own national identity in culture and art.
